Sorolla. Obras maestras del Museo Sorolla

Sorolla. Obras maestras del Museo Sorolla
3 Oct

This exhibition offers a rare chance to experience Joaquín Sorolla’s painting in Valencia, the region that shaped his artistic vision. Sorolla. Masterworks from the Museo Sorolla presents around sixty works that normally belong to the Museo Sorolla in Madrid and form the core of the artist’s legacy. Organised at Fundación Bancaja, the show takes visitors through Sorolla’s main themes: his early studies, family portraits, Mediterranean beach scenes, vibrant gardens and late landscapes. Seen together, these works reveal how he captured light, colour and movement in a uniquely modern way. Designed for both local audiences and visitors to the city, the exhibition is an ideal introduction to Sorolla as well as a must-see event for those who already know and admire his work.

Why this exhibition matters

  • It brings together works rarely displayed outside Madrid and offers a unique chance to see Sorolla’s key works in Valencia.

  • It emphasises the artist’s foundational collection - works he and his wife Clotilde retained - and thus offers insight into what the artist himself valued.

  • It provides both depth and breadth: from early academic studies to mature mastery of light, from intimate gardens to expansive seascapes.

  • It enhances Valencia’s cultural offering by placing Sorolla’s legacy in his birthplace’s region, linking the artist to the local cultural identity.

Key take-aways for visitors

  • Look out for emblematic works such as Paseo a la orilla del mar, El baño del caballo and La siesta

  • Notice how Sorolla’s brushwork and use of light evolve over time - early period vs later vibrant Mediterranean scenes.

  • Explore how the exhibition connects portrait, landscape and social themes under the umbrella of luminous realism.

  • Utilise the guided tours or audio-guide (if available) to gain deeper context about the work, the artist’s background and the collection history.
