María Carbonell. The Subversive Stitch

Embroidery leaves the domestic sphere and enters public view here as image, message, and protest. Through textile symbols and contemporary slogans, this exhibition reconnects threadwork with feminist history and reveals how a once-silenced practice can become a visible act of resistance.

The project explores the historical role of textile work as a tool used to shape ideals of femininity, virtue, purity, and devotion. Practices such as embroidery were long treated as silent, anonymous, and decorative, excluded from the main narratives of art.

María Carbonell reactivates the visual codes of those historical banners in a contemporary context, introducing present-day slogans that reflect both the persistence and the evolution of feminist struggles.
