Andrés García Ibáñez. Una mirada al realismo español

For the first time in Valencia, Fundación Bancaja presents a major monographic exhibition dedicated to Andrés García Ibáñez, an artist whose work is deeply connected to the Spanish realist tradition.

The exhibition brings together 84 works created between 1994 and 2026, including some of the artist’s most significant pieces as well as numerous works being shown publicly for the first time.

García Ibáñez’s work is presented alongside 11 pieces by Francisco de Goya, Joaquín Sorolla, Antonio López, Ignacio Zuloaga and Juan Valdés Leal, creating a dialogue between contemporary realism and some of the key figures who have shaped the Spanish artistic tradition.

The exhibition is organised into four thematic sections:

Traditional Genres explores portraits, landscapes and still lifes, connecting García Ibáñez’s contemporary approach with the classical traditions of figurative painting.

Myth and Allegory brings together works inspired by classical mythology, allegorical themes and reinterpretations of major works from art history, using them to explore human nature and emotion.

The Beethoven Series features paintings inspired by the work of Ludwig van Beethoven. Created during the artist’s younger years, these pieces use music as a starting point for personal reflection and broader questions about the human condition.

Friendship and Work focuses on García Ibáñez’s relationship with painter and sculptor Antonio López. The section includes works created together, particularly sculptures, as well as paintings in which both artists interpret the same landscape from their individual perspectives.

The works on display come from several Spanish institutions and collections, including Fundación Zuloaga, Colección Fernando Masaveu, Museo del Realismo Español Contemporáneo (MUREC), Museo Casa Ibáñez and Fundación de Arte Ibáñez Cosentino.

Tuesday–Sunday: 10:00–14:00 and 16:30–20:30
Monday: closed, except on public holidays and the eve of public holidays

Tickets

Reduced admission: €5
Available to pensioners, unemployed visitors, people with disabilities, students aged 13–26, large families and single-parent families. Eligibility must be demonstrated with official documentation issued by a Spanish public authority.

Free admission:
Children under 12 and one companion accompanying a person with a disability.

Tickets are sold at the Fundación Bancaja ticket office at Plaza de Tetuán, 23 and are valid for the day of purchase.

One ticket also provides access to the other exhibitions running at Fundación Bancaja at the time of the visit.

Guided Visits

Guided visits for the general public last approximately 50 minutes and are offered on Wednesday afternoons, Thursday mornings and afternoons, and Friday mornings and afternoons. A minimum of six participants is required.

Price: €5 + exhibition admission.

Group visits are also available on selected Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with a maximum capacity of 20 people per group. Advance booking is required.

Good to Know

The exhibition is particularly interesting for visitors interested in Spanish figurative painting and contemporary realism, but its dialogue with artists such as Goya, Sorolla and Antonio López also provides useful context for those less familiar with García Ibáñez’s work.

A catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition, featuring reproductions of the displayed works and specialist texts on the artist and his practice.

Because admission includes access to the other exhibitions currently on view at Fundación Bancaja, visitors can combine several exhibitions during the same visit.
